THE LIFE OF CHRIST IS A CONFORMITY AND PERFECT ILLUSTRATION OF THE WILL OF GOD... THE LORD'S WILL
MEMORY VERSE : Commit thy way unto the Lord trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.
Ps. 37:5.
BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalm 37:23-37
INTRODUCATION : The Christian is one who has renounced his own will and submits to the will of God for his life in all that he does. The life of Jesus Christ on earth is a perfect illustration of absolute conformity to the will of God (Heb. 10:7). As Jesus was assigned a specific task to perform on earth, so each Christian is similarly assigned a special task. The problem that faces every-Christian then is how to ascertain the will of God for his life. It is our prayer that this lesson will throw some light on this very crucial task of knowing the Lord’s will.
IS THERE A PLAN FOR MY LIFE
Yes, there is a plan for your life. There is a divine plan for each one of God’s people. This plan takes into consideration your personality, talents, needs, potentialities and environment (Eph. 2:10). God has ordained certain specific, tasks, works or race for each individual Christian (Heb. 12:1). Paul could say, “I have finished my course,” only when he had fulfilled his Ministry and his work was completed (11 Tim. 4:7).
WHAT IS THE PLAN LIKE
God’s plan for you is very personal. It is just for you. And the plan is very detailed with every thing worked out step by step (Ps. 37:23). God might not reveal th3e distant future, but His guidance will be continuous (Isa. 58:11). He is always ready to reveal the next step to you but as usual you need to ask before you can receive (Ps. 143:8). One thing you can be sure of is that God’s will for you is always good and perfect (Rom. 12:2). You must also realize that you are incapable of planning your own life (Jere. 10:23) Only God knows the future and He is the one capable of choosing our vacation, life partner or path.
HAVE ALL THE PLANS CERTAIN THINGS IN COMMON
Yes, God’s plans always include certain features. For example, separation from sin into holiness is always in any divine plan (1 Thess. 4:3). Prayer and thanksgiving are always God’s will for us (1 Thess. 5:17-18). Everyone is also expected to do good deeds (1 Pet. 2:15). These three things are basic to every individual plan of God.
WHAT MUST I DO TO BE GUIDED BY GOD
If you are a saved soul and you wish to know God’s plan for your life, there are certain things you must do.
(a) Trust in the Lord (Ps. 37:3, Ps. 32:8). You can only be guided by someone you trust.
(b) Commit everything to Him and Him only. Do not choose first and then ask Him to ratify (Ps. 37:5).
(c) Rest in Him and be patient. God is a King, in fact the King of Kings, therefore honour Him, and not hurry Him (Ps. 37:7). He promises to guide, but not necessarily to reveal His will the same day that you request it.
(d) Surrender to the will of God (Rom. 12:1-2). When He finally reveals His will to you, abide by it.
WHAT METHODS DOES GOD USE IN REVEALING HIS WILL
God is sovereign and does not work according to a set pattern, for He deals with each person differently. However God often guides through portions of Scriptures that keep flashing in to your mind (Ps. 119:105). Caution: Do not close your eyes and point at a random verse, God does not act haphazardly. Saturate yourself with the word of God so that the Lord can bring various portions to your mind as the need arises. God’s will is never contrary to the Bible. Therefore, know the Word. Another method commonly used by God is inner conviction that is given by the Spirit of God (Rom. 8:16). Caution: Always ask: “Is it the voice of my own desires or is it what God wants me to do?” (Jn. 16:13). And obstacle may be a stop light so that we can wait for Him!
CONCLUSION
There are other ways God may use in revealing His will but the above two are the surest. In all cases you surrender your own will and be absolutely neutral if you are to know His will. Pray for guidance, study the Word and wait on God. You only need light for one step at a time. Obey that light and then He will give you further light.
